History and Origins

The Somali cat, often regarded as the long-haired cousin of the Abyssinian, boasts a rich heritage that traces back to the early 20th century. Initially, the longer fur was considered a recessive trait within the Abyssinian breed, but it captivated a faction of breeders who saw beauty in the lush, fox-like tails and silky coats. In the 1960s and 1970s, dedicated breeding programs in North America and Australia began to formally develop the Somali breed, emphasizing the distinctive ticked coat and elegant physique. Named after Somalia—the neighbor to Ethiopia (formerly Abyssinia)—to acknowledge its genetic lineage, the Somali cat has since charmed its way into hearts worldwide with its stunning appearance and lively spirit.

Personality

Somali cats are celebrated for their dynamic, playful personalities. They possess an insatiable curiosity and a zest for life that makes every day an adventure. Highly intelligent, they are easily engaged in interactive play and can master complex tricks and games. Despite their playful nature, Somalis also have a sweet, affectionate side, often seeking out their human companions for cuddles and conversations. Their sociable temperament makes them excellent companions for families and individuals alike, provided they are given ample attention and stimulation.

Nutrition and Feeding

A balanced diet rich in high-quality proteins is essential for maintaining the Somali's health and vitality. Given their active nature, Somalis benefit from nutrient-dense foods that fuel their energy needs without contributing to weight gain. It's important to establish a consistent feeding routine, offering measured portions to prevent overeating. Fresh water should always be readily available, and treats should be given sparingly, ensuring a well-rounded diet that supports their well-being throughout every life stage.

Grooming and Care

The Somali's luxurious coat requires regular grooming to keep it in top condition. Weekly brushing is recommended to remove loose hair, prevent matting, and distribute natural oils throughout their fur. Despite their longer hair, Somalis are relatively low-shedding compared to other long-haired breeds. In addition to coat care, routine ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care are crucial for maintaining overall health, ensuring your Somali remains as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside.

Specific Needs

While Somalis are generally healthy, they are predisposed to certain genetic conditions, such as renal amyloidosis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Regular veterinary check-ups are important for early detection and management of potential health issues. Their adventurous spirit also means that they may attempt daring escapades, so creating a safe, enriching indoor environment or securely supervised outdoor access is crucial for keeping them out of harm's way.

Training

Somali cats are highly trainable, thanks to their sharp intellect and eagerness to engage with their humans. They respond well to positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise, and can learn a variety of commands, tricks, and behaviors. Early socialization and consistent, patient training can enhance their natural sociability, making them well-adjusted pets that are comfortable in a range of situations and environments.

Need to Know

Prospective Somali cat owners should be prepared for a high-energy, affectionate companion that thrives on interaction and mental stimulation. Understanding their grooming needs, dietary requirements, and potential health risks is key to providing a nurturing home. With the right care, Somalis make enriching, joyful additions to any family, offering loyalty, entertainment, and companionship.aining

Purebred Kitties made the adoption process so easy. I never felt like I was in the dark at any point, which I found so helpful. Alona was genuine, kind, and answered all of my questions in a timely manor. I really appreciate everyone's help in bringing our new baby home, he's loved so much already!

Communication is great. We were able to FaceTime with our baby pay by credit card, and when we want to pick her up, she was exactly as we expected. Only in our house two days and she’s already doing wonderfully with the family! It would be nice if for the cost the pedigree papers were included as many breeders do this the additional cost for these was hundreds of dollars and since she was arriving spayed we didn’t feel the need to pay the additional money. As my title says it’s expensive, but it was worth it the quality And size of this kitten is amazing.

The entire process to get our fluffy bundle of joy was stellar. Maria is super sweet and was so helpful in answering any and all of our questions. I love how the health of the cat is taken seriously throughout the process, ours just came in with some minor sniffles (but were pretty sure that's from traveling through the airport and it was quickly/easily cured). On top of all that, the video call we had to meet our little guy before we bought him was a great way to get an small sneak peak at his personality and reinforce that we were making the right choice. I'm recommending Purebred Kitties to any of my friends looking to get their own Maine Coon.

Just got my second Sphynx from purebred kitties, as my first experience was perfect and without issue. My second experience was just as good as the first. I love both of my cats to death, they have the best personalities, both are healthy, and absolutely adorable.
